The best monuments in Wroclaw

Polish borders were totally different just before the world war two, plenty of cities, especially those from East part of country, used to belonging to Germany. The same is with Wroclaw, one of the most interesting cities in Poland. This nice metropolis is filled with great monuments, so if you are going there for longer weekend prepare for amazing sightseeing!

Ostrow Tumski

The history of Wroclaw is very colourful, those city used to be a part of German, Polish and Czech royals. The oldest, medieval part of metropolis is Ostrow Tumski. This district within many centuries used to belonging to the Catholic church, that is why it architecture is very interesting. At the central part of it stands amazing, Gothic cathedral of Saint John Baptise, constructed in the fourteenth century. It is the only Gothic church in Wroclaw with such a complicated exterior design. At the whole area of Ostrow you will find lovely, medieval mansions, most of them belong to the church still.

Main Square

As a typically city constructed according to German law, Wroclaw has big, historical Square at the center of old town. The main attraction of area is an Old City Hall, amazing example of Renaissance architecture. The building was founded in the late medieval times, however trough next centuries a lot of new parts were created. Plenty of it chambers you are able to see if you only buy special ticket. Entire area of Square is surrounded by lovely buildings, made in many different centuries. Most of the mansions is a home for popular restaurants, pubs and gift shops. During the spring and summer Main Square is filled with travellers and citizens. Next to the Old City Hall you will find a medieval pillory, former place of public executions, nowadays the most popular meeting point into this part of the city.

Another attractions

At the entire area of Wroclaw you will find very great examples of architecture from many time period. If you like an Art Nouveau epoque, you need to go to Rzeznicza street, filled with mansions od this style. At the beginning of twentieth century this city were a home for brilliant, Modernism architects, like Berg for example. At the north part of Wroclaw you will be able to admire the Centennial Hall, one of the finest examples of Modernism in entire continent. Big part of Wroclaw’s bridges were constructed according to Modernism style, like Grunwaldzki Bridge for example. The maker of this bridge jumped from it to the Odra river, because he tough, that bridge will collapse.
